Laos has the dubious honor of being the most bombed country in the world. The US waged a secret war, between 1964 and 1973, as part of their conflict with North Vietnam. It is said they dropped more bombs on this small country than all the bombs that were dropped on Europe by all countries combined during World War II.
The main street, Sisavangvong, runs through the old town of Luang Prabang, and is transformed each night into a market. The Hmong people, the largest of the Laos ethnic minority tribes, sell silks, weavings and many kinds of handicrafts. At around 5 pm, they erect their brightly-lit red and blue cannopies and fill the street. The bargaining is great fun, it seems the seller enjoys the process as much as the buyer., It's a great place to be, and it's almost impossible to pass through after dinner and not be tempted to join in.
